How Our Made to Measure Suit Calculator Works
Finding your perfect fit has never been easier. Our Suit & Jacket Size Estimator guides you through seven simple steps to a jacket that fits like it was made for you — because it is.
Why Made to Measure?
Off-the-rack jackets are designed for the average body. But nobody is average. Shoulders too broad for a 40 but chest too narrow for a 42? A slim waist paired with a longer torso? These are the compromises that made to measure eliminates entirely.
At Bown of London, every made to measure velvet jacket and tuxedo suit is cut and sewn to the measurements you provide. The result is a garment that drapes, moves, and flatters in a way that simply cannot be achieved off the shelf.
Meet the Suit & Jacket Size Estimator
We know that measuring yourself can feel daunting, especially if you have never ordered bespoke clothing before. That is exactly why we built our Suit & Jacket Size Estimator — a step-by-step calculator built into every made to measure product page.
In just seven steps, it takes the guesswork out of sizing and gives you a clear recommendation, before you submit your actual measurements for the perfect fit.

The Seven Steps
Step 1: Trouser Waist Size
Start with the size printed on your current trousers. This is the foundation of your size estimate — it tells us where to begin with your jacket chest size. Simply slide the bar to match your waist. You can work in inches or centimetres.
Step 2: Height
Your height helps us determine whether you need a Short, Regular, or Long jacket length. It also factors into inseam and sleeve calculations. Whether you are 5’3” or 6’7”, the estimator adjusts accordingly.
Step 3: Weight (Optional)
This step is optional but recommended. Your weight helps us refine the fit by calculating your body mass index, which in turn adjusts the jacket size up or down slightly for a more accurate starting point.
Step 4: Body Type
Here you describe your build across two areas:
- Shoulders — Slimmer, Average, or Broader
- Stomach / Midsection — Flatter, Average, or Rounder
These selections fine-tune the chest measurement. A broader shoulder adds room; a flatter stomach keeps things trim. It is about capturing the nuances that a tape measure alone might miss.
Step 5: Fit Style
Do you prefer a Slim Fit — tapered through the chest, waist, and sleeves for a sharper, modern silhouette? Or a Classic Fit — more room in the chest and midsection for comfort and timeless style? Your choice adjusts the final recommendation.
Step 6: Jacket Length
Short, Regular, or Long. If you are unsure, Regular is the most common and works for the majority of builds. The estimator will have already suggested a length based on your height, but this step lets you override it with your personal preference.
Step 7: Known Jacket Size (Optional)
If you already know your jacket size from previous purchases, enter it here. The calculator blends your known size with its own estimate to produce an even more accurate recommendation. If you do not know it, simply skip this step.
Your Results
After completing the seven steps, you will see your recommended:
- Jacket size and length (e.g. 42 Regular)
- Trouser waist
- Inseam
- Shirt neck size
- Sleeve length
These are estimated sizes based on your inputs. They give you a strong starting point — but for a guaranteed perfect fit, we ask you to go one step further.
Your Actual Measurements
Below the results, you will find nine measurement fields. These are the measurements our tailors use to cut your jacket:
- Chest — Circumference around your chest at the widest point
- Waist — Circumference around your waist just above your belly button
- Jacket Length — From the top of your shoulder down to where you want the jacket to end
- Shoulder Width — From your armpit straight up to your shoulder, measured between both points
- Arm Length — From the point of your shoulder, following your bent arm down to where you want the sleeve to end
- Height — Your full height
- Waist Round — Around your waist in line with your belly button
- Hip Round — Around your hips at the widest part
- Inside Leg Length — From the crotch along the inner side of the leg straight down to the floor
All nine measurements are required before adding to your basket. You can enter them in inches or centimetres — just toggle the unit at the top of the measurement section.
Once you hit “Add to Basket with My Measurements”, every measurement is saved directly to your order. Our tailors receive exactly what they need to craft your jacket, with nothing lost in translation.

How Long Does It Take?
Your made to measure velvet jacket will arrive in approximately 10 working days from the date of your order. Each piece is handcrafted from sumptuous Italian velvet, fully lined in smooth satin, and finished with fabric sleeve buttons, twin rear vents, and your choice of pocket style.
Tips for Measuring at Home
- Use a soft fabric tape measure, not a metal one
- Wear a thin shirt — do not measure over a thick sweater or jacket
- Stand naturally and relaxed, do not hold your breath or puff out your chest
- Ask someone to help — shoulder width and arm length are much easier with a second pair of hands
- Measure twice, order once
